Will Hunt has been promoted to third in the definitive 2020 Radical SR1 Cup standings following a decision to not award points for the truncated final race at Donington Park (Saturday 24 October).
Hunt, aged 23 from West Sussex, converted a front-row start into a second-place result in what was meant to be the penultimate race of the season, rising to third in the championship, within striking distance of the driver in second.
Unfortunately, severe aquaplaning and poor visibility in torrential rain prompted officials to abandon the final SR1 Cup race after just a handful of laps behind the Safety Car, and with drivers classified in the order they qualified, Hunt in P8 would fall to fourth in the championship.
However, points have not been awarded for the truncated final race following a review by the championship organisers, and while frustrated to have been denied a run at second place, Hunt is very satisfied with the outcome, having finished 60 per cent of races on the podium in 2020.
“I’m really glad Radical has opted not to award points for a race that never really took place, as nobody had an opportunity to fight for a better track position during the handful of Safety Car laps,” said Hunt. “I can be very happy with third in the championship, having recovered from my non-scores at Snetterton to take four podiums in seven races, including two victories.
"We came so close to finishing second and my conversion rate indicates that I had the capacity to challenge for the 2020 SR1 Cup title. Not only does it shine a light on the importance of pre-season preparation, I know I can’t trip up or make mistakes because Champions like James Pinkerton will always be there to capitalise. Overall, I’m proud to have taken such a significant step forward as a racing driver this year. I’m in really good form and I’m doing whatever I can to hit the ground running in 2021.”
